Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL): Greenwashed & Laborwashed Chocolate
Chiki supports companies that do good. Our product is made with love and care for the planet & people. We wanted to share a blog that was recently written by Corporate Accountability Lab.
Dr. Bronner's recently tweeted a blog by Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL) about Greenwashed & Laborwashed chocolate. This piece is an important read-- in 2023, too many companies are labeling themselves as sustainable, when in reality, there are major flaws to be looked at. It is now trendy for companies to practice sustainability, which is generally a great thing, because companies are making efforts to be better. But we must look at companies, especially major corporations with long histories of wrongdoing, with a magnifying glass when it comes to certifications, and in this case, "certification schemes" and "corporate-run sustainability programs" (CAL).
Companies like Nestle have a dark history in the chocolate world. They have been heavily involved in slave labor and extreme human rights abuses, as well as destruction of the environment, for decades. The commodity of cacao has been involved in countless human rights abuses and we need to pay attention. There are many companies that make chocolate the right way, like Dr. Bronner's, Alter Eco, and Equal Exchange.
Always make sure that you're buying chocolate that uplifts and supports their workers and the environment. Remember that Nestle, as well as Mondelez (who owns Cadbury, Toblerone, Milka, and more), are still harming people & planet. We strongly agree with CAL on the matters of needing standards in sustainability. We urge you to read CAL's blog below.
